Now using iPhoneX, is it necessary if I plan to buy iwatchS4 or S3?

Now the X system is only ios16 at the highest. Many watch systems do not support the 16 system anymore, and the watch system is 9 or 8 to connect, and the fourth and third generations are cheap, costing several hundred yuan.
