Stability of Mac mini plug-in storage

Apple may release a new Mac mini next month, and I was ready to buy it, so I first looked at the M2 version currently on sale. I didn't expect it to start with 256G storage, and it will cost an additional 1,500 yuan to add it to 512G. It must be made of gold. It would be outrageous if the next generation still started at 256G, but I would probably still choose this size. I have seen many plug-in storage solutions on the Internet and want to know how stable they are? Is it much different from the built-in experience?     I'm using an M2Pro Mac mini, and my external hard drive is almost exclusively for photos. You may encounter some problems in the following aspects: beauty, portability, read and write performance (related to interfaces, disk cartridges and disks). Under the premise of low requirements for these aspects, there is almost no impact. I just connected an external SSD. Long-term external connection, 24-hour boot, more than a year, no problems have been encountered

    It's quite stable. I plugged in a Samsung T5 and used it as a server at home for nearly two years. There is no problem.
