Mac mini is most likely a misunderstanding when it is used as a server

Many people follow the trend and buy Mac mini without knowing what, planning to use it as a server, especially UP owners such as Zhong Wenze who send videos to add fuel to the fire. This is purely a misunderstanding. Generally, UP owners mention things they can do with it, such as qBittorrent, Plex, SMB sharing, Time Machine, and cheaper Linux Servers can do it, and whether it is x86 or arm, to put it bluntly, a TV box that costs tens of dollars can do it. Do you have to say macOS to be Time Machine? Find out about Netatalk. Docker for Linux Server is native, and the Docker client for Mac essentially uses a virtual machine for Linux, which has worse performance. Of course, it doesn't matter if you say that Apple Silicon has strong performance and is not afraid of virtualization losses. Or you take an old Mac mini to flash Asahi Linux (supporting M1/M2) and also have native Docker, but I think it's full. Mac is exclusive to some usage scenarios that are strongly bound to Apple's ecosystem, such as content caching and Xcode for CI/CD. But I have used my M1 Mac mini for so many years, and the content cache only takes up about 166M to accelerate iCloud. It probably doesn't work for most people at all. Even backups of iOS devices (iMazing/iTunes) and signatures (AltServer and the like), these so-called Apple ecological things, have Windows versions. No, it is not necessary for Mac Server. Let me talk about a Server scenario that most people can't think of, and I am using it myself, that is AirMessage, which allows Windows/Android machines to use iMessage through a Mac forwarding, which is suitable for dual-wielding parties. This thing is also mandatory for macOS, but theoretically, I can also virtualize a black Apple macOS VM on Linux Server to solve it. Of course, if I have to say it, there is another advantage, that is, the low power consumption of Apple Silicon, which makes some things that originally need to be run with CPU/GPU, such as AI graphing, LLM, video transcoding, etc., not particularly anxious about efficiency. If so, it is very suitable to run with a Mac mini, which is quiet and energy-saving. Now you can buy the old Mac mini for the price of 2K +. If you just run Ollama, SD or press video, it is no worse than spending thousands more to buy an Nvidia GPU. Therefore, I still advise everyone to spend rationally. Of course, if you buy it happily, it is also worth it.

I only have a mini at home, why can't it be used as a server? It is really suitable to solve the basic service needs without shutting down

@ Anonymous10797 The situation you mentioned is very appropriate, but most people have already bought multiple devices such as host NAS Macbook this time. They just want to buy them again and don't know why they bought them for.

This price/performance ratio is not affordable. It is better to buy a domestically produced nas plus 4T plus an n100 16/512 small console. There is still a lot left, and the playability is much higher. Unless you don't have a Mac at home, it's not bad to buy one for daily use.

    And possibly an Apple TV

The mini is inexpensive and worry-free. And not linux 🐶

As a user with NAS soft routing macmini, macmini as a server is limited to simple file sharing in the home, and others really do not work

launchctl is so difficult to use 🌝 🌝

There are some things you may never know if you don't do them For example, when I used my home windows host (cpu i7-6700k) for smb sharing before, the speed measurement with infuse on appletv (wired access) was only 300 + mbps, and then after switching to m2macmini for smb sharing, the same scene The speed measurement is 450 + mbps Finally, turn on the plex media server on both the windows host and mac, and the speed measurement in the same scene can reach 900 + Of course, when I bought the m2, I didn't expect that the speed shared by the smb between the two would be different. I just wanted to free the windows host from the study so that it could be easily taken to the bedroom to play games

@ Anonymous11686 Could it be an issue with your SMB version, Windows configuration or simply the Win host being an HDD hard drive? My current Apple TV reads movies on the NAS without lag at all, and the peak can reach 84.3 M/s. This simple function, no matter what system, can be realized normally.

Not to mention the appearance and power consumption.. Just buy the picture and have fun with this little toy.. Otherwise, why don't you say that Xianyu 200 buys a Celeron notebook and comes with ups..

Soft routing, what kind of soft routing is used with a single network port? Even if surge is matched with bleeding, bypass routing is not as easy to use as the main routing Pressing video, video toolbox is like air, encoding depends entirely on CPU output, 780m next door is N times faster than him It's good to start management and buy a launch control, but app upgrades such as alist are definitely not as insensitive as docker watchtower Running PT, that's really amazing, virtual machine + docker + lightning/usb triple abuse, the painting is beautiful and you don't want to see it When you go to ollama, if you think there are too many red tickets, you can come to me to change the stainless steel washbasin

    Not bad money.

@ Poster has seen before that it is the smb3.0 version, and the hard disks are all the same. I only have those hard disks in total. When I use them on Windows host, I still use the sata interface to directly connect them to the motherboard, which is much faster than using hard disk cabinet connection for mac. Anyone who has been a programmer knows that whether a function can be realized or not is two different things.

Can be used as a gateway

Those in need have already configured all kinds of software and hardware, but are you still waiting for a mac mini? Your cheapest is 3,500, which is enough for me to build dozens of T hard drives However, what Aguo is best at is to stimulate the inflated demand of users who have no demand

    1. Worry-free. Some built-in services are just a few clicks 2. quality. My mac mini in 2006 is still used as the default gateway for multiple devices, and the next two nucs passed it before it 3. 2 The mac mini 1.1 mentioned flashed 32-bit debian 12 and ran 3 alpine 3.19 virtual machines, each with a specific purpose, and I didn't think it was full 3. The performance of the Apple Silicon virtual machine is the same as that of the native machine. It only takes up a little more memory in comparison 4. Quiet and energy-saving op has been mentioned 5. mac mini is very suitable as a server. My consumption is super rational

Some people still use xbox as TV box, or don't interfere with rich brother's life
  • Anonymous702 Nov 9, 2024
Mac mini is used as a server and Surge is used as a bypass router. Don't interfere with Rich Brother's life.
