Why does the color of macos on the virtual machine look brighter and better than that on the host machine?

by Poster Apr 8, 2025 20
Today, I virtualized a 15.4 Mac with PD20 in M1 Macbook pro (15.4), and suddenly found that its colors are brighter and better-looking than those of the host machine. The host machine is obviously much dim, not because of the brightness, but because of the brightness of the colors. Yes, I want to set the host machine to the same color. In the host's System Settings-Display-Presets, it is currently "Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits)". In the same setting location of the virtual machine is the "color profile": Apple Virtual, but this color profile does not provide export. (The host has the option of importing). I would like to ask why the color of the virtual machine looks better, and if there is a way to adjust the host machine to the same effect.

Has the host turned on the weakening dynamic effect in the auxiliary function

The special effects of your host machine are turned off. Normally, my virtual machine will do this to save memory and video memory

It seems that there is a problem with the color description file. Change it to the default description file, or directly compare the color with the color comparator.

Does the host have its own monitor or an external monitor? Connect the external monitor to check whether the color mode is 10bit RGB

If you can take a screenshot, it should be a setting problem. After comparing the virtual machine of my computer, it is normal, but the gamma of the host is low

Actually, it doesn't make much sense. I guess it's probably because the virtual machine uses the screen as srgb to calculate colors, and your xdr screen actually has a wider color gamut, so the colors will be oversaturated. Such colors are actually inaccurate. If you really like it, you can choose a srgb description file and search for how to forcibly add it to the list of description files on the internal screen. In fact, if it is a previous Mac or external monitor, just choose one with a smaller color gamut in the description file, such as "sRGB" (the colors look brighter). But after the xdr screen, Apple seems to limit the choice between the existing presets.

The color error is mapped, the virtual machine outputs the color according to dcip3, the host machine acts as srgb, and then maps to dcip3 for display iOS18 also had this problem before. After taking a screenshot of a photo and then taking the screenshot repeatedly, it will become more and more vivid

@ Anonymous114 No, I looked and it was closed @ Anonymous6048, what special effects do you mean? Where to set it up? If it's "Accessibility"-"Display"-"Reduce Dynamic Effects", I do I turn it off. @ Anonymous11007, I looked and found that there is no place where the "color description file" is set in the host, and the location is replaced by "preset". What I chose is the default. @ Anonymous10816, both the host machine and the virtual machine come with their own monitors. @ Anonymous10966, what gamma are you referring to? Where can I see the settings?

@ Poster, it really doesn't mean much. If I didn't install this virtual machine, I wouldn't even realize it. I just feel itchy when I see the saturated color of the virtual machine. It seems that Macbooks don't use the "color description file" thing now either.

Could it be that the color description files of the color description file host machine and the virtual machine overlap, but actually the virtual machine has a color cast?

It feels like a wallpaper problem Try changing to the default wallpaper

@ Anonymous2889 # 14 Because I set the dock bar to automatically hide, it pops up when taking a screenshot. The app below is white, right? Below this one is the wallpaper https://i.imgur.com/s154gQP.png

@ Anonymous767 So, is there any way to fix it?
  • Anonymous2889 Apr 9, 2025
@ Poster # 16 Look at this and feel like the color is the same

Copy the color configuration of XDR Display to the virtual machine and try it in the application.
  • Poster Apr 10, 2025
@ Anonymous3017 seems to not work, the color management (preset vs color description file) methods of the host machine and the virtual machine seem to be different, and the file format seems to be different
