Is there anything to look out for when migrating from Intel MBP to Apple Silicon MBP?

by Poster Apr 14, 2025 42
I am recently going to upgrade my old Intel MacBook Pro to a new Apple Silicon MacBook Pro. I would like to ask what I need to pay attention to during the migration process? Can it be done silky smoothly with migration assistant? I asked about the migration of bootcamp earlier (https://www.v2ex.com/t/1122758). Currently it looks like Apple Silicon doesn't support bootcamp anymore. The solution found so far is to use Parallels Desktop.

@ Anonymous2380 Yeah, yes. By migration you mean manual migration? Or use Migration Assistant? After reading everyone's replies, it seems that manual migration is the safest.

The main CPU version. When I first changed, I directly copied the previous amd64 package (I didn't think much about it). After running for a month, I found out that I had switched to arm64

Don't migrate, use it as a new computer and re-download the APP. For files, you can use AirDrop to send them

It is recommended not to migrate, just copy important data, and reinstall the latest version of all software.

Do not migrate when changing the architecture, the notebook of the new AS can be migrated later

It is not recommended to use migration. Many colleagues around me have some inexplicable problems after migration

@ Anonymous114 Can you virtualize x86 with Microsoft's official image? Does win10 work?

Remember to re-download the ARM version of all software.

There is one important thing not to forget, if not done, the migration may fail Both machines have to be turned on, don't forget

As mentioned above, it is best to reinstall it, especially if the path is different like Homebrew. You can search it, dump a list on the old machine, and install it on the new machine. For others, reinstall a copy of the arm version. The configuration file can be synchronized according to the requirements cloud or copied manually. In fact, it's not as troublesome as imagined.

I migrated without thinking first, and then upgraded and replaced the latest installation package when I encountered any incompatibility, so as to ensure that the original configuration is not lost

It is strongly recommended not to migrate, it is best to reinstall manually to avoid pitfalls

Migration is strongly recommended against; I bought a new mbp before and also migrated it, but the newly bought mbp did not migrate, which is very cool

    Thank you everyone for your suggestions! At present, I think the steps that need to be done are as follows: 1. Open the application and install the required software one by one; 2. Transfer your own documents and materials; 3. If necessary, you can migrate the configuration files of Terminal (e.g.. zshrc,. bash _ profile, etc.). Do you think there is anything else that needs special attention? Additions are welcome! I'm going to summarize it and then put this information on the top, maybe I can help others. @ Anonymous4390 @ Anonymous7672 @ Anonymous9697 @ Anonymous9561 @ Anonymous1856 @ Anonymous2321 @ Anonymous12996 @ Anonymous4334 @ Anonymous1602 @ Anonymous11001 @ Anonymous7873 @ Anonymous55 @ Anonymous114 @ Anonymous46 @ Anonymous4222 @ Anonymous5823 @ Poster @ Anonymous42 @ Anonymous10417 @ Anonymous2380 @ Anonymous4629 @ Anonymous3148 @ Anonymous12357 @ Anonymous11984 @ Anonymous11735 @ Anonymous2836 @ Anonymous2977 @ Anonymous702 @ Anonymous12097 @ Anonymous769 @ Anonymous1705 @ Anonymous5099
