How to select a large area of text with a touchpad?

by Poster May 6, 2025 38
Sometimes copy a large area of text in the terminal window, tap it with your finger and drag it, and then slide it to the edge of the touchpad. What should I do if I need to select more text?

After selecting a paragraph, release it, press shift and then click elsewhere

My habit is to press the index finger down and slide the middle finger Three fingers are easy to break

My trackpad usage habits are still preserved from this trackpad with separate buttons. I don't have to tap or drag with three fingers, I just put my thumb at the bottom to realize the click function. When dragging a file, press and hold the touchpad with my thumb, and drag the file with my index finger. Index finger middle finger ring finger realize other multiple points. https://www.v2ex.com/i/E08K1Iir.jpeg

Swipe three fingers across the area to be selected. If the finger is close to the edge of the touchpad, you can lift it up and place it in a place with ample space to continue swiping. As long as the interval is not long, macOS will treat it as the same selection action

One operation is to press and hold the left index finger (or another finger) (press or touch), and then the right index finger can slide repeatedly on the touchpad.

@ Anonymous5591 Do you need to turn on something when you swipe it with three fingers? My three-finger swipe here has the same effect as two-finger swipe, both are roll screen

@ Anonymous344 # 7 Accessibility-Pointer Control-Trackpad Options... Dragging style-Three Finger Drag If you are using a very old Mac OS X, this option may be in the Trackpad options. In recent years, it has been moved to the above path (Accessibility)

Turn on the three-finger drag, and then this drag is accelerated. The faster you move, the faster the acceleration of the pointer will be, and you can easily across the whole screen. You can start by dropping three fingers from the beginning without pressing and holding, then dragging quickly to the very bottom, then moving slowly to precisely adjust the final position.

Just looking at everyone's descriptions upstairs feels hard. I am a novice mac user and have turned the mouse.

Three-finger drag, killer function, after starting three-finger drag, you only need to move your index finger in place to expand the selection https://i.imgur.com/aq9oXJ0.gif

I just gave up using the trackpad because of copying large pieces of text, but the mouse is still comfortable

@ Anonymous2884 To be honest, it looks too laborious, but the mouse is still comfortable

@ Anonymous344 # 7 needed. Some friends have already replied, in the accessibility function. @ Anonymous10457 # 10 # 14 Of course, it is always the best that suits you.

@ Anonymous2884 # 12 It is more convenient to open the cursor browser (caret browsing). In addition, in the traditional system, after pressing the mouse button, you can also use the touchpad to continue box selection. Only two fingers are needed, and they can be the fingers of two different hands.

Although Apple's touchpad performs well most of the time, the mouse is indeed easy to use in this situation
