macbook pro update, I want to migrate directly from the old machine to the new machine, but the old machine has been backing up the time machine before. Now the question is, what will happen if the migrated new machine is directly connected to the original time machine backup? 1. Start a new backup 2. Overwrite the previous backup 3. Or continue the previous backup? Any friends who have done it can share it

Anonymous3407 May 9, 2025The Time Machine needs to be reset to continue backing up.

Poster May 9, 2025@ Anonymous3407 Thank you, it means that the time machine is bound to the machine. If you change the machine, you have to open a new backup, right?

Anonymous46 May 9, 20253 will definitely not happen, either you will be asked to erase the old backup, or a new backup will be started directly. There is actually not much difference between 1 and 2, because the backup of the Time Machine is actually a volume of APFS (an APFS sparsebundle for NAS). If you don't want to be overwritten, just rename the original volume and open another volume. It is not possible to continue the previous backup because the migration is not a disk mirror and your new machine will have a new tag
