What format is good for Mac computers and mechanical mobile hard drives?

At present, the mac system is mainly used, and there is a 2tb Western Digital mechanical mobile hard disk, which currently uses NTFS format.
You need to install special software to use NTFS on Mac. Which format is suitable for mechanical hard drives?
I asked Ai, is it recommended to use APFS? Solid-state hard drives generally use APFS. Can mechanical hard drives be used?

Anonymous5641 May 11, 2025exfat if you need frequent data exchange, but don't pretend to be important.

Anonymous5642 May 11, 2025I used mac partitions for both of my 8T's, and now I regret it 🥲

Anonymous10240 May 11, 2025APFS, windows can also access (install special software). ExFAT has no logs, so it's best not to use it

Anonymous8449 May 11, 2025You can use apfs or hfs + The premise depends on what carrier you use between If you use it for Mac, just use hfs + or apfs If it is between multiple systems, exfat is better ntfs Mac driver... not recommended exfat must not be plugged and unplugged after eject, otherwise it will easily damage the data

Anonymous10065 May 11, 2025HFS is recommended for HDD. Usually, files are transferred through the intranet. If it cannot be done, split 50-100GB Exfat for temporary transfer

Anonymous5645 May 11, 2025Mainly use macOS and APFS without borrowing the hard disk

Anonymous4752 May 11, 2025Listen to me, exFat, both systems are compatible. The work basically requires interaction with win. If you don't consider exchanging data with win, then apfs

Anonymous5646 May 12, 2025Let me talk about a problem I encountered recently. I have a 5T mobile hard drive, which has always been in NTFS format. Chiyou NTFS Assistant is installed on Mac, and it is no problem for daily use. Recently, I want to copy the photo file PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary on Mac (more than 500G) to a mobile hard disk for backup. In the middle of copying, a pop-up window will appear ["Finder" cannot complete this operation because it cannot read or write some data in "PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary". (Error code-36)]. I've tried it several times and this pop-up appears every time. Then I contacted Apple Support by phone, and the other party suggested that I back up the data of the mobile hard disk first, use the disk utility that comes with Mac to format the mobile hard disk to exFat format, and then try to copy the photo file. I don't know if any friends who have encountered similar problems

Anonymous9667 May 12, 2025APFS, which essentially generates a lot of fragmented files, does not support mechanical disks well. If you have any need to exchange files with Windows, use exfat, but this has a certain probability of losing data (I haven't lost it myself). It can be divided into two zones, one with Apple's old format HFS and one with exfat.

Anonymous1856 May 12, 2025Just use exfat I've heard people say they lose data since 13... but I haven't lost it once.. The problem of data loss depends on the quality of the memory itself... The influence of a format is not necessary in daily life

Anonymous1676 May 13, 2025@ Anonymous5646 For reference, right-click on the file to display the introduction, and see if "Locked" is checked in the "General" item. I used freefilesync to synchronize files from mac to USB flash drive before, and one file could not be operated for this reason. After unchecking it, it will be fine.

Anonymous5646 May 14, 2025@ Anonymous1676 # 15 Thanks for replying, "Locked" this place, is empty and unchecked. But a window will still pop up during transmission
