M4 air supports the external monitor on the box cover for the first time. Is there a bug?

In the case of the box cover, the c2dp wire is used to connect the dp port of the display, but it cannot light up At this time, when the lid is opened, the external display can light up, and then the lid is closed, and the external display is turned off again. It looks like the lid directly triggers sleep But replace it with the c2c cable, together with the c port of the monitor, everything is normal, and the monitor can light up when the box cover is plugged in outside the line System version 15.3

Does your title mean that the previous MacBook didn't support external monitor use with the cover closed? My MacBook pro works all the time, but C2DP does have a bit of a problem

@ Anonymous359 pro don't know, air series is the first time to support The point is that I doubt the c2dp problem. Have you encountered it too? What is the phenomenon like?

It is normal for c2dp to have problems. Apple's box cover needs power supply when using the display. Your c2c should support reverse power supply so it can work normally. Or add an extra power supply when you try c2dp?

MacBook only supports cover display when charging. If the monitor does, the c to 2 cable has power supply, while the dp cable does not support power supply anyway.

    @ Anonymous357 typo wrong, it's c to c

@ Anonymous2253 @ Anonymous357 Verification confirmation, indeed, but after checking the official, I didn't see the relevant instructions. Is this a feature or a bug? It seems obviously unreasonable. If the lid can be opened without power supply, the lid cannot be opened

It is obviously a feature, otherwise if the video can be output without connecting the power supply and closing the cover, then the battery will be consumed all the time, which may not meet expectations. Of course, it would be better if you were given an option.
  • Poster May 11, 2025
@ Anonymous11728 You can output with the lid open and not connected to the power supply

After the cover is closed, the external monitor displays normally and needs power supply support. If you use DP and connect the charger at the same time, it can be displayed normally after closing the cover. The C to C cable supports reverse power supply, so there is no need to connect to the charger at the same time.

It's enough to close the cover to support dual display output M3 (but it still can't support the third monitor), and M4 supports up to three screens with built-in screens. Why don't you try to wake up with an external keyboard and mouse after closing the cover? Or try changing the direct wiring (instead of the adapter)?

@ Poster Mac in the Intel era was already like this. macOS is not similar to Windows, which allows you to choose whether to plug in/unplug and close the cover to sleep/or just turn off the screen. By default, the cover is closed to sleep, but if there is an external power supply and an external screen, only the built-in screen is turned off.

"For the first time, M4 air supports external monitor on box lid" Under the default configuration of MacBook, the external monitor is always turned off when the box cover is out of power. This is actually reasonable in most cases. Of course, it is better to give an option, even if you need to use a command line switch

@ Poster # 6 "If you can open the lid without power supply, you can't open the lid of the box" This is the case, at least this is the case with M1. And there is no option, the screen will be black when the power is dropped
  • Anonymous2310 May 12, 2025
It needs to be connected to the power supply. If there is no power supply box cover, it means sleeping

@ Anonymous46 Light users, close the cover and use it as a host at home, unplug it and take it away in the cable bag when going out, this should be in line with the usage habits of many people

@ Anonymous5971 Are you sure that M3 air supports cover external connection? M3 may support it, but M3 air does not. I remember doing research at that time, otherwise what would I wait for M4 air?
  • Anonymous46 May 13, 2025
@ Poster It's always been like this without connecting the power supply. The new support of M4 Air is to connect the external dual screen without the box cover... If you want to go home to use the box cover and pursue a first-line connection, you can buy a docking station with power supply. If you are not at ease with the third party, you can buy the original Apple manufacturer

@ Poster # 16 Then it seems that you have been waiting for nothing these years... I have been using the M2 Air close-cover external monitor for 2 years + on a daily basis... https://i.imgur.com/N9E3iZ2.png

@ Poster # 16 Official documentation shows support: https://support.apple.com/en-au/117373 The chips are the same, there is no reason for different forms to support different degrees

@ Anonymous9668 # 18 Close the cover and use an external monitor. All models support it. The biggest difference between M1 or M2 and M3 and M4 is the number of supported external monitors. M1-2 is built-in + only one external connection; M3 is 2 of all types (one internal and one external or two external), M4 is built-in + two external
