mac selection doubt

by Poster May 16, 2025 7
The last time I chose a mac was a few years ago. I bought a macbook m1 16G notebook. After that, I basically used the company's macbook m1 pro 32G notebook. Now I have to run away and plan to buy a mac device for myself, so how many questions do I have? 1. If you already have a MacBook, should you sell it and replace it with a new notebook, or buy a mac mini or mac studio? 2. How to choose between mac mini or mac studio, mainly to write code? (There are too many chip versions now, I hope the memory is more than 32GB) 3. It seems that Windows devices cannot be replaced, and desktop notebooks are too heavy? I hope someone can answer it, thank you very much

If you use it yourself, it is recommended that a Macbook Pro solve all problems. Even with the same system, it is difficult to ensure complete consistency in performance, environment and data synchronization between different devices

If there is only one device, it must be a Macbook, whether it is air or pro. No matter how good the performance of Mac Mini/Studio is, you can't take it out for office work. You can use it wherever you take it. This is a flaw. If you already have a mac, but the model is old and the performance and storage space are in short supply, then I think it is more cost-effective to replace it with a new Macbook. If the performance of the Mac Mini is enough, I recommend the Mini, there is not much consideration. The processor and memory as well as the hard drive are abundant and frugal. Generally, you don't need Windows for work, and there are many alternatives. If you occasionally need Windows and play games in non-office scenarios, you'd better have an extra desktop at home.

Don't think about mini and studio, unless you are pretty sure what you need, mini is not for you

The problem of Mac device combination is indeed a tangled one, especially when it comes to whether you should buy a mini. Many people buy the mini and find it a decoration. I saw this article about Mac device selection, "Single Deviceism: My Device Selection Experience Sharing", which is quite enlightening. To do real work, you need at least a Pro chip

Used in the same company macbook m1 pro 32G Recently, I replaced my old 17 pro with an M4 Air 32G, which is light and thin, with large memory, and I can't feel any difference in performance. The overall feeling of M4 Air 32G is very good, including writing code and ordinary video editing
