I'm going to take advantage of this 618 to buy a new Mac. After reading a lot of community discussions on the whole network, I found that there is controversy about whether to give priority to CPU or memory. In summary, I recommend m4pro 24G accounts for 60%, and recommend m4 32G accounts for 40%. The gap is not particularly large.
Actual price paid after JD.com's national subsidy:
m4pro 24G, 14,214 yuan
m4 32G, 13,699 yuan
The two models are about the same price, on a budget. Still want to ask everyone, do you have any better suggestions?
My situation: Front-end development, sometimes start 3 ~ 4 projects and open dozens of web pages at the same time.
Here is the valuable discussion information I have read, and I hope to give you some reference:

The blogger of this video is recommending M4 pro, but the comments are questionable.
@ Anonymous2628 The memory determines whether it can run or not, and the gpu determines how fast it runs. There is no situation where m4 can't run and m4pro can only run. It's just a little slower, but when the memory is insufficient, if it can't run, it just can't run.

@ Anonymous2629 Personally, I feel that the M4 Pro 24GB will be better. I feel that it really needs such extreme tasks, and 8GB storage is not much different... In terms of GPU, the M4 is not as good as the M1 Pro, and the GPU of the M4 Pro is almost close to that of the M2 Max. Sometimes it is good to play games when you are bored, and the CPU also has a few more large cores. Multi-core is almost twice as good as the M4. Anyway, if it were me, I would have no thought about the M4 Pro. I feel that the 8GB gap can be ignored with this performance span.

Most replies still recommend priority memory.

@ Anonymous2630 Both machines, I have tried them for 14 days +, I have the right to speak, let me talk about the premise, I am full stack, docker, py, node, ts, nextjs, etc.
1. The gap between 32G and 24G is not obvious. The memory bandwidth of m4pro is very large and the scheduling is faster. Although 8g is less, swap can make up for it. Anti-bar: the gap is not obvious
2. Operating efficiency, obvious improvement, it obviously feels that the m4pro will open faster
3. Fan, m4 is single, m4pro is dual, m4 will be noisier than m4pro when doing heavy work, and the threshold is relatively low, it is easy to start, and it has many more sensing times than m4pro, m4pro basically has no sensing
4. Compared with 24g m4pro, 24g m4 is 2500 more, the overall performance is improved by nearly 80%, the memory bandwidth is improved by nearly 130%, and the scheduling efficiency is much higher. The friend above said that memory will fight for the future. Can Thunderbolt 5 also fight for the future on the expanded hard disk?
There are also 32g that can be raised, 24g can still be raised, the sense of boundaries is not that high, and the m4pro memory efficiency is higher

Priority memory.

Unless you want to do large-scale LLM processing or professional-grade drawing work, 24GB is definitely enough. Even 16GB can be used for several years on Mac, and 24GB gives you more peace of mind.
Are you going to take it? I think 24GB should be enough to do most things. I will tend to choose the faster one with TB5.
I think 24GB is enough. The M4 Pro is super strong enough, dare I say it.

In your situation, I'd go with the Pro version and then a little less RAM. I think computing power is more important for you.
The Pro version can be used for a while. And it has Thunderbolt 5, so when you add an external hard drive, it will be much faster than the basic model.
Like you, I bought the base version of the M4 Pro (Christmas present). The silence of this thing hasn't gone wrong yet. Love it so much. I will never use a headback again. I've been a Windows powder all my life. I used a Mac when I took a graphic design class 20 years ago, but finally returned to Windows. Now the Win11 shenanigans have pulled me back into the world of Apple. I will always stay here!
Pro won't go out of style for a while. Plus, it comes with Thunderbolt 5, so when you add external storage, it's much faster than the base version.

Anonymous9692 May 24, 2025Choose 32g memory

Anonymous9693 May 24, 2025@ Anonymous9471 docker Get up, open a few containers, one or two front-ends locally, and open a few vscodes, and the basic memory will be full. But there is actually no strong calculation.

Anonymous9040 May 24, 2025I was really confused, so I went to the official website to buy an M4 Pro 24G and used it for about 10 days to see if the memory would burst frequently. If not, I returned it and bought the national supplement version. If so, then return it and buy the national supplement version of M4 32G. A few days ago, I went to the Apple Store to repair AirPods, and a brother got an Intel + touchbar MacBook. The person at Genius Bar also advised him to consider trading in the old one for a new one.

Anonymous2634 May 24, 2025Of course, you have to pay more for the M4 Pro + 48G memory, otherwise you will regret it two years later if you choose between the two in the title.

Anonymous2609 May 24, 2025I agree with the full-stack boy, I will also choose M4 pro, give up 8 memories, and switch to a more balanced configuration for better performance release

Anonymous6684 May 24, 2025I also struggled with this problem, and finally bought the M4 pro + 48G. After all, after spending so much money, I didn't want to feel uncomfortable using it, and the experience must be full.. I remind the poster to pay attention to the fact that the air screen does not have a high refresh rate and the screen brightness is not as strong as the pro. I mainly use the java back-end and write a little about the front-end. After using it so far, I feel that 24G should be enough.

Anonymous2640 May 24, 2025I was also thinking about this last month. The reason for changing the computer was that the m1 air that had been used for 5 years broke down. Both 13 or 14 inches m4 air 32 + 512 or m4 MacBook Pro 32 + 512 or m4 pro 48 + 1t Work content: back-end development daily meetings/writing materials learning llm and a 64g i7pc Finally chose the m4 pro 48 + 1t At that time, 48g was considered, which could run a model with multiple deepseek parameters, and there would be more possibilities in the future. Looking at the test data, the performance of m4pro is better and the performance of dual fans is better. It is about 10,000 more expensive than the other two and has been used for 2 months. Because the storage space is sufficient, I can learn more. The installation of the software and the running of the demo (hahaha) are very easy to use. The daily content takes up 32g and there is a large surplus. I don't regret reading/running the demo. The docker database is very smooth. My old air is light but with 256 storage, the heat of high load is still a bit uncomfortable.

Anonymous88 May 24, 2025@ Anonymous2639 It is said that the m4 mba can already open the cover and connect two external 4k monitors. (m3 does not work)

Anonymous46 May 24, 2025@ Anonymous2636 swap is not a problem. In principle, swap essentially improves the fairness of memory allocation, as long as the memory pressure does not explode. 24G is really not enough to open too many documents in the development environment. Actually, let's put it this way, M4 full blood has stronger CPU performance than M1Pro, among which multi-core is stronger and single-core is much stronger. Since the 32G memory on the M1Pro was completely fine in the past, the CPU basically wouldn't become a bottleneck, and of course there would be no problem with the 32G memory on the M4. The M4Pro has nearly twice the multi-core performance of the M1Pro, and it is a bit unsatisfactory to use 24G of memory, and you can't use the excessive GPU performance
-
Anonymous454 May 24, 2025Personally, I prefer the m4 pro. The gap between memory 32 and 24 is not that big, but the pro has comprehensive enhancement of CPU, GPU, and scalability. Of course, it also depends on your usage scenario. If you just need large memory, you can also choose m4+32. In addition, the m4 will have a stronger battery life.

Anonymous55 May 24, 2025I personally have a 48g m4pro mbp and a 24g memory m4pro macmini. From my personal point of view, when performing high-load tasks, such as using unreal to package cook, the memory footprint will be very high at this time. If it is 24g, there will be a lot of swap; At other times, there is not much difference between 48 and 24 memories; But the difference between m4 and m4pro is not only as simple as 30% performance, but also heat dissipation specifications, Thunderbolt V and so on; So I recommend you to buy m4pro with 24g of memory

Anonymous2641 May 25, 2025I am using the beggar version M4 mini. I can write front-end, Python, and go without any problem. I don't feel that it is not enough. Until recently, when writing Rust, the container was full when compiling So, if you don't have a definite scenario that requires a higher CPU, choose a larger memory
