Mac mini 4 external portable screen problem

by Poster May 30, 2025 33
Please help, I recently purchased the cheapest 4k portable screen with national subsidy, but the mac mini 4 does not support a type c external monitor + power supply (another external cable is needed for power supply). Similarly, the m1macbook and m1 mac mini are both normal, (cable A Thunderbolt 4 miscellaneous cable, and a Thunderbolt 5 sticker cable from a sugar factory), use the power supply test (both are probably around 5W)

@ Anonymous2054 That should be a quality problem with the external monitor. The question is that the same monitor was fine for macmini m1 and macbook pro before, but the new one is not fine. It may also be that there is a problem with my Mac mini 4. The external docking station is always prone to insufficient usb power supply deactivation prompt appears

Are you afraid it's a line problem?

@ Anonymous2055 bought a 4k, 14.5-inch size. I feel that this size is too small. I can only force zoom to make it more comfortable. It is recommended to be larger

@ Anonymous8320 has tested three wires so far, one for the monitor, one for the brand-name Thunderbolt 4, and the new Thunderbolt 5 from the sugar factory. Is it possible to buy Apple's new Thunderbolt 5? That wire is about to catch up with the monitor,

@ Poster DELL's TypeC line should be reliable

@ Anonymous8320 # 7 https://www.v2ex.com/t/1087901, after flipping through this post, it may really be a problem with the wire. I understand that the sugar-making Thunderbolt 5 wire is better than the Thunderbolt 4 wire, and the previous Thunderbolt 4 is also fully functional, which is probably related to quality.

@ Poster Isn't the sugar maker focusing on soft cords? And their main focus is literature and art/design quality is average

@ Anonymous8449 Yes, it looks good and thin, but I saw the specifications of Thunderbolt 5. With m4pro, I also have a Belkin Thunderbolt 4 at home, I should try it

Same line 4k screen. No lightning wire is required, as long as type-c 3.1 supports the dp protocol. The mini is plugged into the c port at the back. Then the monitor driver board should support one-line communication. I have an idle old screen LQ156d1jw02, which comes with a driver board. According to the merchant, the mini screen is very picky, and BOE has two models that are more suitable. If you want one-line communication, ask the merchant selling driver boards [https://imgur.com/01AzEvW]

I am consistent with this phenomenon, but not m4pro https://www.youtube.com/watch? v = qT21TXzKD0c, can I try it at the Apple store

@ Anonymous102 also has a 3.1 cable. I understand that Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 should be backward compatible, or I don't understand it correctly. I also asked the merchant before buying it and said it was supported

My mini4 supports it, I have to plug it into the port with lightning at the back

    @ Anonymous2056 Is it m4 or m4pro?
  • Anonymous2056 May 30, 2025
    @ Poster # 15 m4's

@ Anonymous2056 # 16 So maybe it's an exclusive problem with m4 pro? I looked through the YouTube comments and they all seem to appear on m4 pro

    @ Anonymous2054 Hello, is your device m4 or m4pro?

My portable screen can be displayed + powered by one cable, but the maximum brightness is compromised and external power supply is needed to obtain a better display effect. I guess the Mac mini's type-c output power is not enough.

@ Anonymous357 I used the c port power test and it was probably around 5W, m1 may be a little higher
