How do you know which versions of iOS/iPadOS activation is allowed by Apple now?

Have a few old iOS devices at home. Want to reset it. But I've heard that iOS whose activation server is turned off can't be activated again. I know that besides the latest iOS18, there are several older versions of iOS17, 16 that are offering some security updates. It stands to reason that the recently released security update of the old system should still be activated. But it can't be activated after how old the version?
And after a period of time, for example, if a major version has not released security updates, how can we know clearly whether these major versions can still be activated at this moment?

Anonymous2370 May 30, 2025You can check it on ipsw.me. It should only be 18.5 at present. Verification has not been turned off. It seems that some devices still have 18.3?

Anonymous1711 May 30, 2025Resetting in iOS only verifies your apple id lock. Activation only appears after flashing the version. Using DFU in iTunes can only flash the last version supported by this model. You cannot enter without jailbreaking and flashing into the old version of iOS

Poster May 30, 2025@ Anonymous2246 I heard people say before that particularly old devices should not be reset at will, because there may be no way to activate them again after reset. From ipsw.me, it seems that there is no need to worry, even if it is old as an iPhone4, there is iOS 7.1. 2 (11D257) that can restore. @ Anonymous2370 Generally, only one sub-version of the same large version can be activated. This is normal.
