iMac external hard drive, problem consultation

by Poster Dec 12, 2019 48
[iMac (21.5-inch, 2017)] (https://support.apple.com/kb/SP758?locale = en _ CN) This computer, the built-in mechanical disk is probably exhausted. When reading and writing is good, it is 30M, and when it is bad, it is less than 10M. Therefore, if you want to connect an external solid state as the main disk, the system, software, and documents are all placed here. The reason for external connection is that the computer belongs to the company, so avoid disassembling it. I have the following questions to ask you. > Is it better to buy an external mobile solid-state drive or a desktop solid-state + hard drive box? > > Is there any recommended product, preferably one that has been tested. > > When used for a long time, will the speed be slowed down due to the temperature increase? Thunderbolt port, whether it is a hard disk box or a mobile solid-state drive, is more expensive. Therefore, the main consideration is the USB 3.1 interface.

It is highly not recommended to use an external hard disk. It is fine at first, but it will become stuck in less than 30 minutes, and the temperature is so scary that it feels like it is about to explode. It's really better to persuade the company leaders to disassemble and replace the machine: jianshu.com/p/cb284c809976

@ Anonymous5251 Convince that disassembling a computer is harder than replacing it with a new computer 😫 Is it because the temperature is too high?

    Agree 1L

Try to choose a disc with lower heat generation, such as the sn500 (the sn550 has also been released, but the situation is not yet clear).

When my 660P write capacity is around 30G, I start writing 50M/s FYI, as for 30 minutes, it will become stuck. I WTG ate chicken for hours and didn't see a card. I don't know if eating chicken doesn't require too high data writing.

Oh yes, 660P hot, it's really hot.

@ Anonymous11545 I'm afraid that it won't be ideal after buying it, so I plan to replace the built-in disk

The SanDisk solid-state mobile hard drive I use for my 2019 iMac is 512G. It is very fast and I don't feel hot. The only disadvantage is that it feels interfering with Bluetooth

Is @ Anonymous11663 used as a main force?
  • Anonymous11545 Dec 12, 2019
@ Poster # 7 If so, don't be stingy with speed, go to 770P or Samsung 970

If you have enough budget and buy Thunderbolt 3, the USB-c speed is still not fast enough

@ Anonymous11545 # 5 660 p is a qlc particle. It only slows down after writing 30g continuously when the cache explodes. If you don't continue to read and write large files, don't be afraid.

Some people buy cheap "domestic" solid-state, just because they like that the game does not have high writing requirements in operation, but it is not recommended. Recommended M.2 solid state intel 760p, toshiba rd500, rc500, c2000 pro, western digital sn750. intel 660p, Samsung 860 QVO and Yingruida P1 are all QLC particles and are strongly not recommended.

Try Lexar's Mobile Solid State? I bought one three months ago, and the read and write speed is much faster than the previous SanDisk and Samsung ones

@ Poster 2017 iMac 21.5 external samsung 850 evo, not even hard drive case. There is no problem, fever use is normal, daily use and development are normal.

Directly connect the external sata solid-state to usb disk. The temperature is definitely very low and the speed will not be stuck. You can even install a system on an external hard drive

@ Anonymous5255 mac os usb trim is very poorly done, my Samsung pro ssd external system will basically get stuck after a month

Let's take a look at the Samsung T5. I bought it yesterday and it arrived today. I'm going to connect it to a mac mini as a system.

imac is connected to Samsung 860evo, the read and write speed has changed from the original 40M to the present 400M, it has been used for more than two months without any problems, the ccc migration system and software is very convenient

@ Anonymous2728 # 13 The problem is that the 660P is what can meet USB 3.1 rates. If you use the same speed of 770P (40Gbps) and other qualities, it is far from meeting the requirements of USB 3.1 speed. It can only be satisfied with Thunderbolt 3. Therefore, it can be considered if the writing is not high. But the calorific value is really hot. Of course, it's okay to ignore it and continue to use it... Intel guarantees it for five years.
