Do older iMacs support 8k playback?

by Poster Dec 5, 2020 8
My imac is a late 2012 version. i5 three generation processor. I replaced the SSD. Then 8g memory independent graphics gt650m YouTube is very stuck when watching 4k. I want to ask if this card is due to the line. Or is it about my hardware? The 4k on the web page only needs to be decoded by the graphics card. Or is it decoded by the processor?

Right-click to see the buffer speed. If the speed is tens of thousands, it is probably not a network problem

The hardware is too old to support VP9 hard solution 7th generation and later Intel CPUs will do

YouTube videos ≥ 1080p are encoded in VP9 or AV1. VP9 hardware decoding needs System: macOS Big Sur or above. Hardware decoding requires hardware: Intel Skylake generation or newer integrated graphics or AMD Navi or newer discrete graphics.

At least on Intel Mac, VideoToolbox Hardware Decoding VP9 has a maximum specification of 4K. VP9 streams exceeding this specification will be decoded and played with VideoToolbox software. Some YouTube 8K videos began to remove the VP9 video stream, leaving only AV1. Currently no Mac can hardware decode AV1, and Safari doesn't support software decoding AV1. You need Chrome or Firefox to play these 8K videos.

Quietly ask, why do you want to watch 8k if you don't even have 4k resolution?

@ Anonymous5680 Watch high-resolution images on low-resolution devices for a clearer and purer experience The third generation of i5 is a bit old. I guess it is also very difficult for your computer to solve the mainstream 4K 10bit 422 HLG content. You can find a CCTV-4K video and try it

@ Anonymous3668 # 6 He means that you don't have to behave 4k. You have to ask if you can be 8k. It doesn't mean that 8k is unnecessary

    In 2020, m1 can't bear 8k vp9... it can only play H.265
