Because it is someone else's computer, a 2017 iMac with a mechanical hard disk, can an external solid-state drive be connected to run the system

RT, it's not my own. I don't want to toss or take responsibility, but the mechanical hard drive is really stuck. Can I connect a solid-state drive to usb to install MacOS in it?

    The usb speed doesn't work. Thunder and lightning are okay, but they are expensive. It's better to just switch to ssd, get a 256 for more than 200, and replace all four imacs for the company. A carving knife can be done in minutes

    There is no need to buy Thunderbolt. It is hard to find one that natively supports thunderbolt 2. The performance bottleneck lies in the hard disk, not the interface. USB3.0 is enough. My last iMac was the 1TB FD version, and I have experienced trouble with USB and TB interface SSD.
