A 15 year old iMac, don't want to take apart the screen and install ssd. I plan to use an external usb ssd to set up a Fusion Drive. There is such a successful case.

Anonymous7483 Mar 21, 2022It should not work. The built-in interfaces and protocols are different from the external ones. The external one is USB, and the system does not allow you to do it.

Anonymous3706 Mar 21, 2022Just install an external large-capacity SSD. No matter how fusion performance is, it is not ideal.

Anonymous1359 Mar 21, 2022It seems that Thunderbolt can identify external disks as internal devices, but usb probably won't work

Anonymous5372 Mar 21, 2022Buy an SSD hard disk box or docking station that supports Thunderbolt 3 or 4 protocol, and the system will recognize it directly. I recommend Thunderbolt 4, otherwise it will be a waste of PCIE interface speed.

Anonymous5373 Mar 21, 2022The correct solution to the external ssd installation system mentioned above. !! I used Fusion Drive for a while when I blacked Apple 10.13, and there was no performance improvement at all [256gb ssd + 1tb hdd + 9700k 16gbmem], which was slow as hell.

Anonymous3749 Mar 21, 2022Direct external PSSD running system, my old machine 2015 Macbook Pro 15 "runs properly, external box with Thunderbolt 2 interface.

Anonymous7483 Mar 21, 2022A 15-year-old iMac should have a Thunderbolt 2 interface or a USB 3.0 interface.

Anonymous7483 Mar 21, 2022So the upstairs said Thunderbolt 4 is serious

Anonymous3501 Mar 21, 2022Connect usb 3.0 to the hard disk to install the system, and it can be successful. Just slow

Anonymous5374 Mar 22, 2022@ Anonymous263 When starting, you can choose to start from external ssd, right

Anonymous5375 Mar 25, 2022Yes, I bought an nvme hard drive box from IMAC in 2015, plugged in an nvme solid-state drive, and then rebuilt the system and booted it directly from the mobile hard drive

Anonymous3456 Sep 19, 2022fusion is not a high-tech, but a helpless move when SSDs were expensive at that time. You can just boot directly from USB SSD. There's no need to engage in any fusion.
