iPad does not require macOS

I don't know when, but the saying that "iPad will be unproductive without getting rid of iPadOS" has gradually become mainstream. Even several Android tablets took the lead in using Linux containers to make their tablets "get rid of the shackles of the tablet system", but the experience is not particularly good (save file dialog box, conflict between UI layout and special-shaped screen, etc.).
Although I personally hate that Internet companies deliberately restrict the functions of web pages to promote mobile software, it is undeniable that mobile apps have developed their own ecosystem on many occasions, such as FlipaClip, Shapr3D, CapCut and Polarr, etc. Although there are many functional shortcomings compared with the desktop apps they replace, in many cases they can do the job in a simpler way.
In fact, the tablet has developed into a platform independent of the computer. At that time, the slogan "Your next computer, why a computer" did not mean that the iPad could replace the laptop, but that the person referred to in the text didn't necessarily need a "computer" in the traditional sense.
Of course, there are a lot of bugs in iPadOS now (for example, the file App is stuck), but this is not a reason to give up iPadOS.
~ ~ And if the desktop platform is limited to Mac, then iPadOS actually has a game ecosystem that is far superior to macOS (although the types of games are different from PC) 🤣. ~ ~

Anonymous623 May 9, 2024What's even more frightening is that judging from what Apple is doing so far, they want to install iPadOS on Mac.

Anonymous2159 May 9, 2024I agree with you, I don't really want an iPad running macOS either But I still hope that the iPad will open the virtual machine, which is good for occasional emergency use on portable devices

Anonymous46 May 9, 2024There is absolutely no problem with iPadOS being used for entertainment and content consumption, but the problem is that things are not quite right when put together with iPad Pro and the Magic Keyboard pushed by Apple. It's not that there are some bugs, but the design idea is not at all oriented to the multi-tasking foreground + background and file-centric management required by most workflows. When we say "the iPad Pro needs macOS", we are not saying that the iPad Pro should run macOS directly, but that the iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard needs to have the features of a desktop system to have basic productivity. If you only regard iPad as an emergency or a very mild "passing" level to complete the work, then it doesn't need such fancy performance at all, let alone the "next computer" claimed by Apple a few years ago. The person referred to in this article still must need a "computer" in the traditional sense. I don't see any reason or possible development (without desktop OS) that would make us not need computers

Anonymous6048 May 9, 2024In fact, the only problem is that iPadOS is too weak. If it can be powerful enough to run most professional apps, it will not be a big problem It's just that macOS can run iOS/iPadOS apps, but iPadOS can't run macOS apps There are still too few professional apps adapted to iPad

Anonymous10410 May 9, 2024Compared with the MacBook Air, the usage scenario of the iPad with the Magic Keyboard is a bit useless. The battery life is not as good as that, the functions are still castrated, and the weight is not too much. Insisting on using it as a production tool is actually embarrassing yourself and it.

Anonymous349 May 9, 2024The interaction problem is not the problem Learn the moral character of Gu Sheng: when the keyboard is connected, it is macOS (optimized for keyboard and pointer), and when the keyboard is not connected, it is iOS (optimized for touch screen). There are two biggest reasons to prevent macOS on iPad. The first is that Apple does not want to give up the closed ecosystem of the App Store, which is the Apple tax. The second is that after supporting macOS, it is difficult to convince MacBook Air and iPad dual-wielding users to continue to buy Macs, and MacBook Air is The best-selling machine in the Mac series. Technically speaking, existing iPads do have the problem of too small storage space. After all, macOS itself is particularly large, and 128G is too small, but I think it is completely fine to provide macOS for devices above 256G. The advantage of iPad + Magic Keyboard is 2-in 1. While retaining the advantage of iPad, I can connect the keyboard to turn the device into a notebook at any time. But the problem now is that this notebook form is basically unable to perform those "tasks that the notebook form is suitable for completing" because iPadOS.

Anonymous632 May 9, 2024The iPad doesn't need macOS. I don't think there is any problem. As a tablet, you still have to do a good job in the core experience After all, I have really used surface pro, this kind of computer is not like a computer tablet is not like a tablet, the experience is really bad The problem with iPadOS has always been that the software support is not good. For example, Lightroom is semi-disabled on the iPad, but it is the full version on the apple silicon MacBook. I don't know if it is the iPadOS limitation or the manufacturer is too lazy to do it In addition, many of your replies about iPad give me a feeling of diodes. I don't understand it. iPad and computer are not mutually exclusive. If you buy an iPad, you can't buy a computer?

Anonymous6619 May 10, 2024Why not iPadOS and macOS dual systems? The operating system kernel is the same, you can use whatever interface you want, which is not very good

Anonymous12788 May 10, 2024@ Anonymous6619 I think so too, cut if you want. Moreover, the so-called small storage is not a problem at all. Just limit the 1TB version to dual systems.

Anonymous2828 May 10, 2024The current situation of ipad is a big horse-pulling cart, and Apple also stuffs things into the cart for ipados instead of replacing it with a big cart.

Anonymous2559 May 10, 2024@ Anonymous6619 The advantage of ipad is that it supports touch screen and pen, but iPadOS is too extensive in multitasking. Even with front-desk scheduling now, compared with macOS's multitasking, there is still a big gap! Moreover, compared with macOS, most software on iPadOS still lacks functions. I think the above 2 points are the biggest shortcomings of ipad! I personally hope that the ipad can run macOS, but the macOS on the ipad needs to be integrated with iPadOS. When the user connects the second control keyboard, the ipad runs the full version of macOS, which can run all macOS software; When the ipad is used alone without the second control keyboard, it runs ipadOS and supports all software on ipadOS!

Anonymous12769 May 10, 2024@ Anonymous8634 # 3 If I can only take one with me when I go out, I will choose an ipad, because the keyboard can be removed, the screen can be touched, and the work can be done. Going out is mainly for entertainment and work, if it is a business trip, another story

Anonymous10129 May 10, 2024Apple has been pushing the productivity of the iPad Pro, but in fact, the iPad Pro is hardly different from ordinary iPads except for screen performance and peak performance. If you just carry the entertainment terminal as a personal person, there will be no problem. But if we want to advocate productivity, it has been so many years since 2015. We can't say that there is no one, but it is still quite limited. Think about the evolution and changes in the software and hardware of productivity tools of the original iPad Pro in addition to playing games? According to my limited understanding, there is one more Leonardo da Vinci in official publicity that talks about productivity and can be used, but how many professionals use the iPad version of Leonardo da Vinci to cut films?

Anonymous3975 May 10, 2024What does iPad Pro want? It's really multi-tasking. As far as the battery life is concerned, I'm afraid I don't have to charge it in an hour when I run multi-tasking...

Anonymous8944 May 10, 2024What I want is to be able to run macOS, not only use macOS...

Anonymous46 May 10, 2024To put it more, iPadOS has been iterated for so long, and it is still essentially a mobile phone system rather than a complete multi-tasking operating system. Many defects can't be explained by an interaction restriction. First, iPadOS does not support real background multitasking. All background refreshing and running still need to be implemented by specially designed APIs or global push, but most productivity processes cannot accommodate this design Second, iPadOS is still extremely closed on the file system until today. No matter what you do, you have to import files into the sandbox of the corresponding App, and Apple shows no signs of relaxing this restriction. If the iPad is used as a module in the workflow, then this problem is not very big. Just import it back to the computer after the iPad is processed. However, if the ambition of replacing the computer is to be realized, the iPad must become the hub. It should be unbearable for most normal users to isolate such a diaphragmatic file. Then again, how many tasks besides drawing and notes are suitable for exporting to the iPad and then importing back? In most cases, if there is a computer, it is done on the computer. Third, the support for external devices is extremely poor. Many people complain about the peripheral ecological disadvantages of macOS compared to Windows. Except for the mouse, keyboard and officially supported handles, basically you can't use other peripherals of iPadOS normally. To this day, iPadOS still doesn't support Files to automatically save APFS partition unlocking key or automatic unlocking, which means that encrypted mobile hard disks can basically not be used naturally, which is Apple's own ecosystem.
