Can the macmini m4 24g + 10g network port version be used as bypass + nas?

by Poster Apr 23, 2025 22
At present, the data of networked devices at home is 70 + (all those that can use Bluetooth mesh use Bluetooth as much as possible). I want to use macmini + surge as bypass routing. The main routing is Ruijie Scorpio Longbo version (main routing) + Ruijie Snow Leopard be50 (sub-routing) Are there any risks in such a network structure coupled with macmini bypass? macmini bypass + nas, is the performance enough? Can anyone share their experience?

How big is a 70 + home, why are there so many devices?

As the old saying goes, when you ask "Is xxx enough", it must be enough, because the premise of this sentence is that you think it should be enough, but you are not sure, and you need external affirmation to strengthen your opinion

    @ Anonymous3590 smart home devices

The same mac configuration as yours, the same scenario, also use surge, more than 100 networked devices, and it is also a bypass gateway. There is no problem at all, and it is a stable batch. However, I didn't turn on surge to automatically use it as a gateway. I specified it manually, for fear that if there was a problem with my mac, it would affect my family. In addition, when surge opens the gateway, apple tv always prompts that it cannot connect to HomePod mini. I saw that someone on the surge forum raised this question, but there is no conclusion so far, so I have given up using HomePod mini as a speaker on apple tv. Except for this problem, there is no problem.

The performance is definitely enough, but it's rubbish for a Mac to make a NAS. It's better to buy a green link that costs more than 1,000 yuan and brush the system. If you don't just want to toss, I suggest you give up Mac and make NAS as soon as possible

I only use Surge for operable devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and Apple TV. I don't think smart home devices are necessary

The performance is sufficient, but it always feels a bit too wasteful to use mac as a gateway/bypass router...
  • Anonymous6803 Apr 23, 2025
@ Anonymous46 shouldn't it be overperformance, why not recommend wow

There is no doubt that the performance is definitely enough, but this guy has a single network port, I will never use it for routing, so you just use a surge as a ladder

@ Anonymous6803 What performance does NAS need? macOS doesn't even have a serious file system with redundancy, and drive pooling can't be done. If you plug it into an external USB, you can't even see the smart information. Then the SMB service that comes with Mac crosses Platform compatibility is far inferior to Linux and Windows. To be honest, when considering NAS alone, the mini is not as good as the N100

The performance is definitely enough, mainly due to software ecological issues

@ Anonymous6803 And APFS is basically only suitable for single-disk SSDs. Although it comes with snapshots, it cannot be manually controlled and is not friendly to HDDs. The best solution I can think of for a Mac as a NAS is to run a Debian virtual machine on the mini and then pass all the hard drives through it

Everything else except nas is fine. Being nas is really not good. I just hung up a hard disk cabinet as nas, that's it. Recently, I virtualized a Feiniu os, which is much more comfortable

Here, I use the ASUS BE series router, which feels quite easy to use. nas just goes to pick up some rubbish.

I have an m2 mini that is purely used as a surge bypass router and its performance is completely sufficient At the same time I also use openwrt to dial and dhcp @ Anonymous6801 atv cannot connect to mini, which should be some kind of configuration problem. You can try to see what the domain names in mdns are, and don't fakeip the local domain names. I haven't had this problem, my atv keeps using a pair of HomePods as speakers

This configuration is fine with 10w computers. However, if the nas hard disk uses usb, it will still suffer from the cpu performance

I installed surge on my macmini m4 as a gateway and as a backup machine, and there was no problem at all.

Don't go through bypass routing in smart homes, there will be many bugs.
  • Poster Apr 24, 2025
@ Anonymous13684 You can only have an independent smart home wifi at home, which is included in Ruijie's routing, but I don't know if Kekou settings are accurate to wifi

Can't smart homes be done in one ha? Where do you need such a big battle?
